Business security isn’t something you can compromise on. Too many businesses fail to prioritise it, planning to increase their security efforts only when there’s money available to do so. However, by taking this risk you’re putting your business in danger of suffering from theft – potentially scuppering the future of the company. The threat of business crime can seem distant to those who are new to the sector, or a fortunate enough to have escaped its effects in the past. Here at Acclaimed Security, we’ve been the go-to security firm in Leeds for years. We’ve protected hundreds of firms from the threats of thieves and fraudsters. During our time as a Leeds security company, we’ve learnt some important security statistics and numbers that we think it’s important for everyone to be aware of.

According to the recent Commercial Victimisation Survey, 46% of businesses dealt with crime between July 2011 and July 2012. That’s right – nearly half of businesses found that they were the target of crime, including theft, robbery, fraud and assault. The average business has a fifty-fifty chance of being the target of crime. Are you willing to take that chance?

There were 15,500 incidents of crime per thousand business premises in urban areas. That’s three times higher than the crime rate in rural areas. If your business is located in a large town or city such as Leeds, you’re far more likely to be targeted.

Premises that suffered from repeat victimisation suffered from an average of 29 incidents of crime in a 12-month period. This means that if you’ve been targeted once, you’ll be targeted again, and again, and again. It’s vital that you get up-to-date security solutions in place to prevent your situation from worsening further.

Nearly three-quarters of crimes reported by businesses as part of the CVS were theft related. This includes theft by customers, theft by employees, and theft by suppliers. Unsurprisingly, the wholesale and retail sector deals with the largest rate of theft, with shoplifting accounting for 53% of crime incidents in these premises. The importance of manned guarding should not be overlooked.

£3.4 billion

This is the cost of theft to UK retailers and supermarkets in 2012, amounting to 1.2% of sales or £124.60 per household.

Over half of vandalism incidents at businesses occur at the weekend. Manned guarding is therefore important throughout the week, especially when the business is closed.

Nearly a quarter of a million burglaries of non-commercial premises occurred between July 2012 and June 2013.

As you can see, business security is essential. Non-commercial crime isn’t a rare event. It happens often, particularly in urban areas and to premises that have suffered previously. An outdated security system makes you vulnerable to crime and puts your business prospects at risk. Discussing your security requirements with an experienced Leeds security company such as Acclaimed Security will allow you to get an inexpensive security solution that you can rely on to deliver.
