While good business security is as much about providing a deterrent as it is about creating a physical barrier, it’s always encouraging to know that fool-proof security solutions such as manned guarding, alarmed response and mobile patrols are on hand should you need them. The art of keeping people out has been adapted and perfected over time, culminating in the contemporary security solutions that help to create some of the most secure institutions on the planet. Take a look at these locations boasting some of the world’s most ‘super’ security – no-one is getting in or out of these three facilities without permission!
The famous Fort Knox is known the world over as one of the planet’s most impregnable institutions, and even Goldfinger himself failed to plunder Kentucky’s depository of US financial assets back in 1964! At the last count, Fort Knox held in excess of 5,000 tons of gold, which is roughly equivalent to 2% of all the gold ever mined on Earth. Of course, it would take more than a couple of Yale locks to protect all that lot from the hands of thieves and fraudsters. As such, Fort Knox is located within a US Army facility housing 30,000 soldiers equipped with tanks, artillery weapons and assault helicopters – talk about manned guarding! If you manage to sneak past the squaddies then the bank vaults themselves are protected with 21” thick doors impervious to drills and cutting torches. In a nutshell, it isn’t worth the effort!
La Sante Prison
While some secure facilities such as Fort Knox are designed to keep people out, others are built with the express purpose of keeping people in. Take La Sante Prison in France, for example. This facility is home to some of the country’s most dangerous, notorious prisoners, and as such strict security protocols have been put in place to ensure that they remain behind bars. Only five people have ever successfully escaped from this Parisian prison, and the last of these was helicoptered to freedom by his wife way back in 1986! There have been several subsequent escape attempts since, none of which ended particularly well for the prisoners. Recently a group of prisoners attempted to escape the establishment through its drainage system, taking inspiration from The Shawshank Redemption. The prison authorities had even secured this potential way out, however, and the would-be escapees therefore found their attempts were in vain.
For decades, Area 51 has been the subject of more conspiracy theories and overblown stories than almost anywhere else on Earth. Countless individuals swore blind that the US Air Force base was actually a cover for a facility dedicated to research into extra-terrestrial beings, with some even suggesting that experts at the site were examining the recovered bodies and vehicles of alien life forms. Such stories were given additional credence in the eyes of many thanks to Area 51’s strict security protocols. The airspace around the facility is off-limits to civilians and normal military personnel alike, while the use of ‘deadly force’ is authorised so that manned guards can effectively shoot trespassers on sight should they attempt to access the area. To the disappointment of conspiracy theorists, however, Area 51 was declassified by the C.I.A in 2013. It’s actually a development and testing facility for top-secret military aircraft, obviously…
